Arthrosamid® Knee Injection
Long-Lasting Relief for Knee Osteoarthritis — Without Surgery
Is Knee Pain Holding You Back?
Osteoarthritis of the knee is one of the most common causes of chronic pain and reduced mobility in adults. For patients who have been managing their symptoms with painkillers, physiotherapy, or steroid injections and are finding that these measures no longer provide sufficient relief — but who are not yet ready, or not suitable, for knee replacement surgery — Arthrosamid® may be the next step.
Mr. Tarun Taneja offers Arthrosamid® as part of a carefully considered, personalised treatment plan. It is one of the most significant advances in non-surgical knee care in recent years, and he is pleased to offer it to suitable patients at his clinics across Essex and London.
What Is Arthrosamid®?
Arthrosamid® is an injectable hydrogel — a solution that is 97.5% water and 2.5% polyacrylamide gel — administered directly into the knee joint as a single outpatient procedure. Unlike steroid or hyaluronic acid injections, Arthrosamid® is non-biodegradable, meaning the body does not break it down. It is classified as a permanent implant.
Once injected, the hydrogel integrates with the synovial lining of the joint, providing sustained cushioning, reducing inflammation, and restoring a more comfortable range of movement. Many patients notice a meaningful improvement in their pain levels within four weeks of treatment.
How Does It Work?
In a knee affected by osteoarthritis, the protective cartilage gradually wears away, the joint space narrows, and the synovial lining — which lines the joint and produces lubricating fluid — becomes inflamed. This inflammation drives much of the pain experienced day to day.
Arthrosamid® works by embedding itself within the synovial tissue, acting as a long-lasting cushion that reduces mechanical loading and dampens the inflammatory process within the joint. The result is a sustained reduction in pain, improved mobility, and a better quality of life — from a single injection.
Is Arthrosamid® Right for You?
Arthrosamid® is most suitable for patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis who:
- Have not achieved sufficient relief from conservative measures such as physiotherapy, oral pain medication, or other injections (steroid or hyaluronic acid)
- Wish to delay or avoid knee replacement surgery
- Are not suitable candidates for surgery due to health or other personal factors
- Want a minimally invasive, day-case treatment with no significant recovery period
It is important to note that Arthrosamid® is not a treatment for inflammatory arthritis (such as rheumatoid arthritis), and it is generally less effective in cases of severe arthritis where joint replacement surgery remains the most reliable option.
A thorough consultation with Mr. Tarun Taneja is always required before any treatment decision is made.
What to Expect
Before the injection Patients will be asked to take a course of oral antibiotics approximately two hours before the procedure. Because Arthrosamid® is classified as a permanent implant, this precaution is taken to minimise any risk of infection.
During the procedure The injection is performed under local anaesthetic, typically with ultrasound guidance to ensure precise placement within the joint. The procedure takes place in a clinical treatment room and takes only a matter of minutes. Patients can go home the same day.
After the injection Most patients experience some mild swelling or discomfort around the injection site in the first few days, which settles quickly. Patients are advised not to drive themselves home immediately after the procedure. Most begin to notice an improvement in pain within the first four weeks, with benefits continuing to develop over the following months.
Duration of effect Clinical studies demonstrate that Arthrosamid® provides sustained pain relief for up to five years following a single injection — a significant advantage over treatments that require repeated doses.
The Evidence
Arthrosamid® has been evaluated across multiple independent clinical studies — the IDA, DAISY, ROSA, and LUNA trials — all of which demonstrate reproducible, sustained pain reduction in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
Across all studies, Arthrosamid® consistently exceeds the Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID) of 9 points on the WOMAC pain subscale — the threshold at which patients themselves notice a meaningful improvement in their day-to-day pain. Crucially, this level of benefit is not short-lived: the data show that pain relief is maintained for up to five years following a single injection, with all four studies recording results well below the MCID threshold at every follow-up point measured.
Mr. Tarun Taneja considers the strength of this evidence to be one of Arthrosamid®'s most compelling attributes. Very few non-surgical knee treatments are supported by long-term data of this quality across multiple independent trials. For patients seeking a reliable, lasting solution that avoids or delays the need for surgery, this track record provides significant reassurance.
